There were several former Georgia Football players who played in the opening game of the NFL season.

After making a prediction on which former Georgia Football players would make an impact this week, the Patriots immediately ruined my day. They placed Malcolm Mitchell on injured reserve for the season just before the game. The Pats sure kept the extent of his injury under wraps until yesterday. For those of you who picked him for your UGA fantasy team after I suggested it, I’m sorry, that’s my bad!

However, there were a few other former Bulldogs who did stand out and both of them play for the Chiefs. The Kansas City Chiefs had a big win and beat the Superbowl champions Patriots 42-27. They were led by an incredible performance by Kareem Hunt who accounted for 246 yards from scrimmage in his first ever NFL game. That’s the best statistical performance from a rookie ever.

Justin Houston had a huge impact, sacking Tom Brady twice in the second half. He also stuffed the Pats in a 4th and 1 which led to a turnover on downs. Chris Conley only had 2 catches, but the second was a big time 25 yard grab that put his team in the red zone and helped seal the game.

Overall, it was a great night of football to kick off the NFL season. It was particularly sweet for Falcons fans who have had to deal with Patriots crowing about their Superbowl victory all off season. While the Pats are still the clear favourite for the title this season, it was sure nice to see a couple of dawgs play a big part in a New England loss to start the season.
