Jim Cheney

You knew it was coming. Cheney is once again the on this list. He was a constant fixture on this list last season, he was on last weeks needs improvement list. But last night, he probably had his worst night as play caller for the Georgia offense in his time on staff.

Have you ever seen a coach refuse to run what works as much as Jim Cheney? Or how about one who constantly runs what has proven to not work?

I’ve said this for almost a year now, but I kept getting proven right every week. Cheney puts his vision of what the offense should be over what actually works. To this point, he’s been painfully stubborn. But last night, and excuse the hyperbole, he was just plain stupid.

Chubb and Michel only combined for 26 carries with only 13 each. That is ridiculous, especially in a close game. They are the best duo in college football, everyone knows that. They are the senior leaders on offense. They didn’t come back for their senior year to pass block and run the “wild dog”. They came back to run the ball down people’s throats.

And it’s not like they are struggling to find yards with the carries they have. Both have over five yards per carry so far this year. That’s a first down every two touches, not a stat to complain about. With five yards a carry, Chubb and Michel should be receiving 40-50 hand-offs or tosses combined each game.

And how are the quarterbacks supposed to settle into games when you don’t let the run game develop and you don’t start drives with quick passes? Without a great pass block, it’s up to the coach with play calling to help his quarterback. But Cheney is proving to be more of a hindrance than a support.

If he doesn’t begin to show improvement as this year progresses, Kirby Smart should consider cutting Cheney from the staff. A better offense coordinator can’t be difficult to find when you already have one of the worst
