6. 2006 Sugar Bowl vs. West Virginia

If you’ve forgotten, you’re probably thinking, wait, the Sugar Bowl is played in New Orleans. And you are correct, but after the 2005 season, the Sugar Bowl was moved from the Super Dome for a reason we’re all to familiar with right now.

Hurricane Katrina had devastated the gulf coast and hit New Orléans the hardest. The Super Dome was still being used as a shelter at the time so the decision was made to move the Sugar Bowl to Atlanta. The Georgia Dome was the closest domes stadium that wasn’t already booked for that day.

This gave the Bulldogs three straight games played in the city of Atlanta. The started with a 14-7 win over Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium, followed by the aforementioned rout of LSU in the SEC Championship game.

The Bulldogs attempted to win their third straight game in Atlanta and they were heavily favored since their opponent, West Virginia, was led on offense by three freshman. Unfortunately for Georgia, those three freshman were Pat White, Steve Slayton and Darius Reynaud.

At one point in the second quarter, the Mountaineers led 28-0. But Shockley led a comeback and Georgia trailed 31-21 at halftime. The 52 first half points set a BCS record for points in a half.

The Bulldogs cut the lead down to 31-28 early in the third quarter. Both teams put together 90-plus-yard drives in the fourth quarter to set the score at 38-35 late. Georgia had West Virginia stopped at midfield with a minute and a half to go. But a fake punt picked up a first down and West Virginia escaped Atlanta with the victory.
