Don’t mess with Vandy

Yeah the opponent was Alabama A&M, but the point is, Vanderbilt doesn’t look bad. They don’t look like SEC East contenders after wins over Middle Tennessee and Alabama A&M, but they don’t look like a team that should be overlooked.

This Vanderbilt team looks exactly like the team I said they were in the off-season. Great defense with a good running game. They’re a demoralizing team to have to play. You know points will be hard to come by and you know it will be difficult to keep their offense out of third and short situations.

But Vanderbilt has their first big test of the season this week when they host Kansas State. That will be the game where we see if Vanderbilt can actually compete for the East or not. And then after that, they play the measuring stick of the SEC: Alabama.

I’m not expecting Vandy to beat Alabama, and you shouldn’t either. But if they keep the game close, it might be time to consider them as legitimate contenders.
