Georgia Football has put together some solid offensive performances so far this season. The key for that to continue is an improving offensive line.

It’s been a great start to the season for dawg fans. After a fantastic offensive performance last week, one of the things that really stood out to me was the improvement on the offensive line. This was a huge worry for Georgia Football fan going into the season. With top-level running backs and young but talented QB’s, there is no doubt the o-line was the key unit for this team.

The performance of the line, going up against a good Mississippi State defense was impressive. So let’s take a quick look at how this unit is getting better:

Veterans have improved.

One of the things that had a lot of fans worried was the fact that UGA returned 3 players who were on the team last year. Lamont Gaillard was new to center and Kendell Baker was disappointing last season. Isaiah Wynn was average at best last year at left guard and so it was concerning to see him at the key position of left tackle.

While a lot of fans were hoping to see other players come in, all three of those players have improved. Baker has become a serviceable guard although he is still the player on the line who struggles the most. He’s never going to be a superstar, but if he can just be an average player, this line will be just fine. Gaillard has made a seamless transition to center from guard. He’s actually playing better there than he was last year which is very impressive. It was certainly unexpected considering he joined UGA to play on the defensive line.

Isaiah Wynn is probably the best player on the line right now. That’s a big thing and it’s something Georgia needed to happen. He was handed the left tackle role early on without much of a fight, but so far he has earned it on the field. He’s a bit bigger than he was last year but he seems to have kept his speed. He’s kept Jake Fromm clean so far although he is yet to face a premier pass rusher this season.

All three of these players needed to step up and do better this season. Fans should be very happy that all of them have so far.
