Injuries derail the system

The system worked to near perfection so of course 2003 would bring more of the same. However, injuries dismantled Georgia’s offense in 2003 and Shockley was one of the players who fell. He missed the entire second half of that season.

Prior to his injury, he was used more as a runner. His passing stats were not as great as they were in 2002. He finished with just 88 yards with one score. But he rushed for 101 yards, putting him on pace to double his rushing total from the previous year.

However, Greene did well shouldering the entire load. He finished with a career high 3,307 yards and he led Georgia back to Atlanta in a losing effort in the SEC Championship Game. Would Shockley’s presence in the late season games with Florida and LSU have made a difference?

Tough to say. Maybe more for Florida than against LSU. But who knows, it may have been the difference between 11-3 and a National Championship.
