Georgia football improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the SEC after its 45-14 win on the road versus Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon.

Kirby Smart wasn’t happy, the players weren’t satisfied. But fans of the Georgia football team had a lot to be proud of Saturday night following the Bulldogs 45-14 over the Vanderbilt Commodores.

And it speaks a lot for the state of the program where allowing 14 points and winning by 31 points just doesn’t seem like enough. But it wasn’t enough for Smart who pointed out numerous times in post game interviews that he wasn’t satisfied. The Defense allowed Kyle Shurmur to pass for 172 yards with one touchdown and the unit was gashed several times in the first half.

Smart isn’t going to make excuses for the defense, but the Bulldogs are banged up on that side of the ball. Injuries to Trenton Thompson and Reggie Carter added to the absense of Natrez Patrick who the school suspended for possession of marijuana. Davin Bellamy played with a club on his hand and Malkom Parrish was clearly bothered by his ankle injury.

All things considered, the defense played a typical game for them. They only submitted one scoring drive since Vandy’s other touchdown concluded a one-yard drive following Jacob Eason’s fumble. And even on that series, the Commodores still needed four plays to get into the end zone.

Smart is going to be disappointed and unsatisfied, and that should excite Georgia fans. This team doesn’t have a hint of complacency. That starts with Smart and it rubs off on everyone else in the program.

More from Dawn of the Dawg

Running towards history

Nick Chubb and Sony Michel led Georgia’s stable of running backs to one of the best rushing days in school history. The Dawgs rushed for 423 yards, led by Michel’s 150 yards and Chubb’s 138. Elijah Holyfield added 51 yards, Jake Fromm had 36, D’Andre Swift had 32 and Brian Herrien had 28.

Chubb also had a pair of touchdowns, Michel had a 50-yard touchdown run where he outran everyone and tip-toed the sidelines despite tweaking his ankle. Holyfield also ran in the first touchdown of his young career. For the second straight week, he punished defenders in mop-up duty. The young man is going to earn more playing time by the time we travel to Jacksonville.

The SEC rushing list had a shake-up Saturday. After surpassing 4,000 career yards, Chubb moved up to seventh in SEC history surpassing Emmitt Smith, Anthony Dixon and Charles Alexander. He’s just eight yards shy of LSU great Dalton Hilliard and 21 shy of Florida’s Errict Rhett.

It’s too much to ask for Chubb to pass Herschel Walker’s 5,259 yards. But with a little over 500 more yards, he’ll pass Darren McFadden for second place.

Sony Michel cracked the top-50 on the SEC’s rushing list by passing Joe Gunn of Ole Miss and Brent Fullwood of Auburn. He’s right behind Lars Tate on the school’s rushing list. Both Chubb and Michel will cement themselves as two of the best tailbacks in SEC History by the time this season is over.

Jake Fromm still playing his part

Once again, not much was needed from Fromm. He only attempted 11 passes and he completed seven of them for 102 yards with two touchdowns. His numbers aren’t what’s impressive, it’s his poise, leadership and other intangibles.

On his 47-yard touchdown pass to Terry Godwin, Fromm had a perfect play-fake. Of course it was helped out by the potent running game. Fromm was all alone in the backfield, but he still needed to make a good throw and he did to Godwin right on the goal line.

Fromm was just efficient. He’s not making mistakes. He knows that he’s not getting many attempts so he’s making the most out of the attempts he gets. And he knows he’s the starting quarterback now and not just the place holder.
