2. 1998 Peach Bowl vs. Virginia

What is it about Georgia making historic comebacks in the Peach Bowl against teams from Virginia? We go back to 1998 for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl for Georgia’s rematch with the Cavs. And just like in 1995, Georgia fell behind big early. This time the Bulldogs trailed 21-0 at one point in the first quarter.

But Quincy Carter got the Bulldogs back in the game with a 11-yard pass to Champ Bailey late in the second half.  Carter and Bailey connected for another touchdown pass early in the third quarter and a heavy dose of Olandis Gary tied the game at 21. But Virginia did regain the lead with a touchdown, however a missed point after kept the score at 27-21.

Georgia took the lead for good with another touchdown by Gary and Carter extended the lead with a quarterback sneak. The Bulldogs then led 35-27. But Virginia had some fight left in them, they scored one more touchdown cut the lead and attempted a two-point conversion in an attempt to tie the game. However, the defense shut them down to hold the score at 35-33.

Still, Virginia wouldn’t go away. They recovered an onsides kick to try to win the game on a field goal. But the kick went wide right and Georgia held on to win the game and get revenge from how the 1995 Peach Bowl ended.

The two Peach Bowl games with Georgia and Virginia are still considered two of the best games in the Peach Bowl’s history. It will certainly be part of the narrative in 2019 when Georgia and Virginia meet in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.
