Every major defensive statistic

Make no mistake about it, defense wins games and championships. Offenses may get the upper hand more these days. But more times than not, the teams with the best defenses are the ones competing for national titles.

This season, Georgia has one of those defenses. They’re fourth nationally at 12.6 points per game, third with 253 yards per game, fifth with 82.1 rushing yards per game and 13th with 170.6 passing yards per game.

Before the first half of the Missouri game, no one could move the ball on Georgia with any consistency. Of course, the Tigers slung the ball around on Georgia’s in that first half, but defensive coordinator Mel Tucker made adjustments and the defense looked as they had all season in the second half.

Georgia clearly has one of the best defenses in the nation this season and they’re probably the best defenses to play in Athens in over 10 years. The offense is flying high at the moment, but it’s easy when they know that the defense will likely get a quick stop to get them back on the field.

The last time Georgia’s offense looked this great, the defense was porous. When the defense was great, the offense was mostly ineffective. Finally, for what might be the first time since the mid-1980’s, Georgia has a secure defense to compliment a potent offense.
