Trenton Thompson and the defensive line:

After a great first few games, this unit has struggled a bit the past few weeks. Their best overall player Trenton Thompson has been recovering from a knee injury and several other players have missed time. Tyer Clark missed the Samford game and has been battling some minor injuries. The week off should be a great chance for him to get back to 100%.

David Marshall and DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle both sat out the game last week with undisclosed injuries. Neither are starters, but what makes this front so dangerous is its ability to rotate in good players and always stay fresh. With both of them and Thompson out, those linemen left played a lot more.

That could be one of the reasons UGA failed to get a solid pass rush last week. That is an area Georgia needs to improve on going into the game in Jacksonville. Florida has a young QB who makes mistakes when he is pressured. UGA needs to be able to bring that pressure with just 4 men when it can.

These two weeks should help those players get back. Thompson was riding a bike on the sideline last week which is promising. We do not know the extent of Marshall or Hawkins’Muckle’s injuries but Smart did not indicate they were serious. If we go into the next game with a fully stock defensive front, I really like our chances to punish whoever Florida starts at QB.
