Negative recruiting:

One of the things that inspired me to write about this topic was that I heard the guys at the Glory UGA podcast mention something on their last show. They brought up the fact that opposing schools use this particular policy to negatively recruit against us.

While not naming names, both Tyler and Curtis mentioned that they knew of times where this happened. Where coaches from other schools would plant the possibility of suspension at UGA into the minds of potential recruits. More importantly, of telling recruits that cops in Athens target players and they will be treated much more fairly at another school.

Now some of you might think that’s not a big deal. You might think that the only recruits who would care about that are guys who care more about weed than they do ball. But to me, that’s shortsighted. Like I said before, I’d rather the guys on our team didn’t smoke weed. But I don’t think that just because someone does that they are either a bad person or football player.

While our policy likely helps us dodge a bullet with the Kyle Davis’ of the world, it’s not always a good thing. I certainly wouldn’t want us to miss out on a 5-star player who smokes weed every now and then because he was worried about being suspended. I also wouldn’t want to miss on a similar guy who drinks beer as a freshman. To me, neither of these is a big enough deal to miss on a top player.
