Things have changed under Kirby Smart:

This is a different era for Georgia fans. For most of the past decade, we have been pretty happy being a solid 9/10 win team. We had a good coach and a great man in Mark Richt. He did a fantastic job moulding our guys into decent football players and better men.

But the arrival of Kirby Smart has changed things internally and externally. The football program looks and feels very different. There is a culture being built right now that is centred around winning championships. The message has changed and it’s not all about how you can be the best person you can be. It’s about how you can be a part of a truly special team that can achieve great things.

Both of these cultures are positive. Neither of them allows bad behaviour and both encourage the players to be hard workers who are selfless. But it’s still different and people inside and outside of the program are starting to expect big things from this team.

If this policy handcuffs our team, it needs to change. Richt coached UGA for 15 years and won the SEC only twice. Does anyone believe that we will allow Kirby that same amount of rope? Will our fanbase give him 10 years with no SEC title before they put him on the hot seat? No, they won’t. Results matter now more then they have in a very long time at UGA and it’s important we don’t allow old rules to get in the way.
