5. Saban can’t coach forever.

I’m not saying he’s going anywhere right now. I’m not even saying he’ll be gone in a year or 2. But Nick Saban isn’t getting any younger and he’s been doing this thing for a while now. When he does leave, there’s going to be a spot available. Who will be the next great SEC head coach?

McElwain has shown that he can coach Florida to SEC East titles, but whenever they meet Bama in the title game, they get curb stomped. Butch Jones is about to be fired. Gus Malzahn looked like a possible heir to the throne early in his tenure at Auburn, but that program looks like it could be headed in the wrong direction now. Will Muschamp? He’s at South Carolina, not to mention he’s admitted that he blacks out sometimes during games.

So that leaves Kirby. He is a student of Saban who is an elite recruiter and has shown by a 7-0 start in his second season that he is a pretty good head coach himself. Will Kirby Smart be the next Nick Saban? No. But he does have the opportunity to be the first Kirby Smart. A trip to the SEC championship, a win there, and a playoff appearance will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the move to make a coaching change and the hiring of Kirby was the right move for the short-term and long-term success of the Georgia football program.

I want this success, and I know the rest of you out there in Dawgnation do as well. Is there a lot of work left to do? Sure. The next 5 games are going to be tough. The SEC championship game will be really tough. But we know what has to happen to take that next step and become a truly elite team. So say it with me, Dawg fans. Say it loud. Say it proud. WE WANT BAMA!
