Could Gus Malzahn be a surprise exit?

For a guy who went to the national championship in his first season, Gus sure has disappointed since. His achievement in coaching Cam Newton to the Heisman and a national championship seems to have shielded him from criticism for a while. But things are not good with the War Eagles right now.

Since that title run, he is yet to win more than 8 games in a season. His only postseason win came against Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl in 2015 when his team went 6-6. In short, he’s not exactly delivered.

This year was supposed to be different. He once again has a loaded defence, particularly up front. He also has a great young quarterback in Jarrett Stidham who many think has a legit NFL future. Things started off well. Yes, they lost to Clemson, but that’s an acceptable loss. What isn’t acceptable is losing to an LSU team that is average at best. Especially when you still have a chance to win the SEC West.

Malzahn has a lot on the line for the rest of the year. If he beats Texas A&M and Georgia, he can probably survive a loss to Bama. If he loses to UGA, at home, he could be in trouble. He’ll be staring at another 8 win season and that isn’t going to cut it.  Not at Auburn.
