The no. 1 ranked Georgia football team improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the SEC with a win over South Carolina. Georgia won the SEC East later that night.

This is now officially the best nine-game start for Georgia football since 1982. That was the last time Georgia started a season 9-0. But now the 2017 Bulldogs are 9-0 and after Kentucky’s loss to Ole Miss last night, Georgia is going to the SEC Championship Game to most likely play Alabama.

Georgia achieved that 9-0 start Saturday with a 24-10 win over the rival Gamecocks of South Carolina. The game was closer than those outside the rivalry expected. But the Bulldogs took care of business.

Being a close ball game, someone had to step up and stand out to help lead the Bulldogs past Carolina. Actually several Bulldogs did that and here’s a short list of such players. These are the top performers from Georgia’s win over South Carolina.

Terry Godwin, Javon Wims and Mecole Hardman

With South Carolina stacking the box to stop the running backs, the receivers needed to get open and make catches. Jake Fromm’s top three targets did that and then some. Godwin, Wims and Hardman all caught at least three passes for 40 yards each.

Godwin led the group with three catches for 53 yards. Wims followed with five receptions for 46 yards and Hardman caught three passes for 41 yards. Both Wims and Hardman caught highlight film passes. Wims caught a pass while dragging his foot near inches from out-of-bounds, Hardman caught a jump ball and landed in bounds.

Nine games into the season, this is very promising. The wide receiver corps was one of the biggest concerns going into the season. But now, as the regular season is coming to a close, Georgia has three reliable receivers who catch almost everything and deliver yards after the catch.

Eventually, someone is going to stop loading the box to stop the run and start paying more attention to the receivers. When that happens, Georgia’s offense will really be unstoppable.
