Georgia Football: Top takeaways from South Carolina win
With the East in the bag, we’re playing for the playoffs:
After Kentucky’s loss to Ole’ Miss, Kirby Smart has his first prize. Georgia has won the SEC East division. Right now, a lot of fans have bigger prizes on their minds, but that is still a big accomplishment. Georgia last won it in 2012, it has been 5 years since we held the division.
Before the season started, when most of us were doing our pre-season predictions, 9-3 and 10-2 records were expected. Now, the Dawgs sit 9-0 and credit has to be given, they have vastly exceeded our expectations.
Rather than playing to win a place in Atlanta and a shot at the SEC, Georgia is playing for the biggest prize possible. If they can continue to win, they have a real shot at making the College Football Playoff. Even if they lose to Alabama, the college football landscape is pretty murky right now. The SEC could easily get 2 teams in if other conferences continue to disappoint.
To be honest, I can’t believe that we’re here right now. I never expected Kirby Smart to have Georgia at this point so early in his tenure. There are still big games to come and this team needs to stay focused. One bad week and the dream will go away. That may happen, Auburn is a good team and Tech are always pesky. But the fact that we’re at this point is a huge win for our fans.
Even if we miss out, this is a season to remember. We’re a program on the rise and there are some all-time UGA greats on this roster. We’re not where we want to be yet, but for now, all of us can keep dreaming that the SEC East is just the first accolade of many when the 2017 season ends.
