It’s amazing how narratives change:

Isn’t it funny how sports journalists and commentators are some of the most fickle creatures on earth? One week, they are crowning Georgia as the potential long-term challenger to Alabama. Then after one loss, they are being branded a joke. Be honest, how many legitimate articles have you read this week from prominent commentators that have written the Dawgs off already? It’s as if the mainstream sports world now expects UGA to never play football again. Might as well cancel all those scholarships and just shut it down guys, you lost 1 game, you’re clearly worthless.

In some ways these reactions are understandable. They generate clicks. Georgia fans like myself read them because we’re masochists who want to consume anything UGA related. Rival fans love them as well because there’s nothing they enjoy more than UGA’s misery. That’s particularly true for Gator and Vol fans who are having historically bad seasons.

In this day and age, writing a reasonable opinion about a team is becoming less common. Pundits don’t get much attention when they say ‘you know Georgia is still a decent team.’ In a world where Skip Bayliss and Stephen A. Smith rule the sports airwaves, pundits have to be controversial.

And that’s why this week is going to be painful for UGA fans. These stories aren’t going anywhere. They’ll still be writing them in 2 weeks even if the Dawgs go 11-1 because quite simply, it generates interest. So as Dawg fans, it’s time to develop some thick skin. You’re going to read and hear a lot of negative things about your team for the rest of the season. We’re going to have to rise above it.
