The running backs

Georgia’s run game returned with a vengeance on Saturday. After getting shut down by Auburn, Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and the stable of backs ran for 381 yards against Kentucky. Chubb led the way with 151 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. Michel had 87 yards on 12 carries with a whopping three touchdowns.

That means that Jake Fromm and the other three backs combined for 148 yards. Fromm carries the ball twice for 18 yards. D’Andre Swift had 66 yards on just seven carries, Brian Herrien had 48 yards on a measly three carries and Elijah Holyfield had 16 yards on two carries.

It was another remarkable game from Georgia’s run game and we even saw a new wrinkle for the run-offense. Late in the game, Georgia began running out of an under-center variant of the single-wing formation with one tailback in a normal position with a wingback on one side.

I’m interested to see how Georgia utilizes this formation in the future. It allows the Dawgs to have two backs on the field, while keeping both in a good position to receive hand-offs in a non-shotgun formation. And using Swift or Herrien as a wingback puts them in a good spot in the passing game.
