Georgia football: Clean, Old Fashioned butt kicking against Georgia Tech
Georgia football defeated Georgia Tech 38-7 on Saturday to improve to 11-1 going into next week’s SEC Championship Game.
Nick Chubb said he came back to Athens for, among other reasons, a win over Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs fell to Tech in the two games that Chubb played in. He’s fully aware of how important the rivalry is to the Bulldog Nation. He wanted to make sure his time in Athens ended with a win over the Yellow Jackets.
And we can say that Chubb delivered. But he only rushed for 53 yards, that’s all he needed. Chubb had plenty of help. Sony Michel embarrassed Tech defenders, Fromm had a great game, and the defense shut down the triple option. All of that culminated in a 38-7, Georgia football victory.
The stats
Georgia contained Tech’s normally potent rushing attack to just 188 yards on 46 team carries. That meant that their passing game was mostly useless. Georgia only allowed 226 yards of offense to go with just one touchdown.
The defense also made a pair of great stops on Tech’s more successful drives. One ended with a pass break-up on fourth down. The other ended with an interception by DeAndre Baker. The game might have been much different if not for those big plays.

On offense, Georgia just did everything right. The running backs combined for 247 yards on 43 carries with three touchdowns. Fromm completed 12-of-16 passes for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Javon Wims caught five of those passes for 77 yards with one score. Ahkil Crumpton scored on a 78-yard pass late in the game. Mecole Hardman added 51 yards on three catches.
The scores
Georgia opened the game with a five and a half minutes drive following a stop on defense. Fromm threw a great pass to Wims on the sideline and despite the play looking like a touchdown, officials spotted the Dawgs inside the one. Chubb easily found the end zone on the very next snap to give Georgia a 7-0 lead.
Fromm’s next pass to Wims near the end zone was not taken away the officials though. After four big runs, Fromm threw off play-action to Wims in the end zone for a 14-0 lead. Tech did score their one touchdown on their ensuing drive. But Georgia finished the first half with a Rodrigo Blankenship field goal to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.
The second half was all Georgia though. A pair of big passes by Fromm, one with a great, in traffic catch by Hardman, set Georgia inside the Jackets five-yard line. Michel embarrassed defenders on a short touchdown run to begin the rout.
A healthy dose of Chubb and Michel wore out the Tech defense. Swift took advantage with a 31-yard run down the side line to the two-yard line. He hurdled the line of scrimmage for another Georgia touchdown.
Next: Things we hate less than Yellow Jackets
On the next drive, Fromm hit Crumpton downfield. The JUCO transfer made one Tech defender miss and then ran an extra 50 yards for the final touchdown. Three-straight touchdowns on three-straight drives gave the Bulldogs a 38-7 victory.
