Georgia Football: How UGA can overcome Auburn on Offence
Receivers can’t get beaten up like last time:
One of the things that made watching the last game so frustrating was seeing UGA struggle to throw the ball. There were a few reasons for that. One was the offensive line breaking down and giving Jake Fromm very little time. Another was the fact that the receivers themselves were struggling to get separation.
As we heard this week, Kirby Smart was upset with how Auburn was covering his guys. He apparently sent in 6 examples of defensive holding in the secondary that was missed by the officials. Having forced myself to rewatch that game, I probably saw about 10.
The Auburn defence plays physical football. That’s fine, we do as well. However, their defensive backs were certainly going past the line of ‘physical’ and into ‘penalty’ on a lot of plays. While the referees need to be better and see that this game, the receivers need to also be physical themselves and fight through that coverage.
Look, I hope that the officials take Kirby’s info and call a fair game. But to be honest, I still expect them to miss some calls. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles so what we need is our receivers to physically beat their opponents. Javon Wims is a grown man, he shouldn’t be letting a CB shove him around. Terry Godwin and Mecole Hardmen are smaller, but they are both tough players, They’ve shown they can make contested catches.
UGA needs these guys to give Jake Fromm a chance to make plays. To win, he is going to have to throw up some 50/50 balls. He needs his guys to come down with them.
