1. 2nd Quarter: Pass interference vs Javon Wims

And so we come to the final one. Yes, that Ledbetter call was bad, but what if I told you that the refs somehow made an even worse one? Because they did and this time, they actually took points off the board for UGA.

Just watch that clip again for me, please. See a penalty there? Does Javon Wims look like he’s doing anything wrong there? Other than getting hit by an Auburn player that is. Apparently, Wims committed pass interference when he was picked up by one Auburn defender and thrown into another Auburn defender. Naughty Wims.

Yes, I’m being snarky, but that was a shockingly bad call. Again, when you see the replay, it’s hard to understand what the referees are thinking. More importantly, you just have to wonder why they can’t look up and the replay and say, whoops our bad. That call took 4 points off the board for UGA who had to settle for a field goal.

I understand that being a referee is a hapless job. I sure as heck wouldn’t want to do it. People like me writing about this stuff make it even worse, but officials just like players need to learn from their mistakes. The SEC choose their so-called best crew for their showcase game this weekend and those guys had an absolute shocker. Hopefully, the league takes a good long look at these plays and does something to try and improve officiating next season.

One thing is for sure, college football cannot afford a championship game to be decided by officials and not players. More often than not poor officiating is a convenient excuse for the losing side. That wasn’t the case on Saturday and the SEC is lucky that UGA was good enough to overcome Auburn and the officials.
