Georgia Football gears up for a wild early signing day
Georgia Football is riding high as it heads to the CFP, but it’s coaches have plenty of off the field to do this month with the new early signing period.
As Georgia Football fans start their preparations for the Rose Bowls, UGA’s coaches have their hands full. That’s because not only are they going to have to get their side ready for the big game. This December will be the first year of the new NCAA early signing period.
What is the new period?
For many years, college football players have had to wait until February to sign their paperwork. That is unless they were early enrollees and then they could do it in December. Well, that has all changed now. This year, there will be a 72 hour period where any recruit eligible for the 2018 class can sign their paperwork and commit to a school.
This year that will be from the 20th of December until the 22nd. Any player who wants to enroll early will have to sign during this period. However, any players who want to secure their scholarship for the summer can also commit and send in their paperwork.
How does this affect things?
The new signing period is the biggest change to recruiting in some time. A lot of programs are going to be pushing hard to get kids to sign their forms and lock down their places. Once a kid has sent the paperwork in, that’s it. They can’t change their mind. In the murky world of recruiting, that provides schools with a rare certainty.
For the kids, the window could be both good or bad. For those players who want to lock down their scholarships, the window is great. They can get their place confirmed and stop worrying about recruiting. Those who want more time will still have another 6 weeks to figure things out.
Now Georgia has a lot of momentum right now. That’s true on the field and in recruiting and once again, UGA is trying to lock down a top 3 class. This signing period could really affect that, so let’s take a quick look at what could be going down for Georgia over the next few weeks.
