Georgia Football losing 1 assistant coach but keeping another
Georgia Football is going to be losing one very talented assistant coach to Tennessee but held off Jimbo Fisher for another.
This is one of the things that sucks about being a great program. When you have a good year, other teams want your coaches. That’s just a fact of life and it’s something that top programs deal with every year. Kirby Smart is going to be challenged every year to keep his coaching staff together. There is no doubt that he put together a very talented group.
Smart lost his first coach this week when new Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt came back to UGA for Kevin Sherrer. Sherrer was the only coach left from the Mark Richt era under Kirby Smart. He has done a great job with the outside linebacking group this season. Not only has he really developed Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy, he has also done a great job recruiting.
Last year, he brought in Walter Grant and Robert Beal. Two seriously talented OLB prospects. Beal is redshirting this year and Grant has found his way onto the two-deep as a freshman. In 2018, he’s reeled in Adam Anderson and Azeez Ojulari at that position group. Sherrer was always going to be targeted by other programs because of his track record.
Sherrer is a loss, but it’s something that comes with the territory. He is moving to the Vols for a promotion. Pruitt is hiring him to be his defensive coordinator and Mel Tucker isn’t going anywhere this season. The only thing worse than having people poach your coaches is having coaches that nobody wants to poach. These are the kind of ‘good problems’ Kirby is going to have to deal with going forward.
