Georgia Football losing 1 assistant coach but keeping another
Kirby ends up keeping one top Assistant:
It wasn’t all bad news, however, this week on the coaching front. Sherrer wasn’t the only coach being targetted for a coordinator post. James Coley, UGA’s wide receiver coach is a very hot name in coaching circles. He was offensive coordinator under Jimbo Fisher before moving to Miami so that he could get play-calling duties.
Having been fired when Mark Richt arrived, Coley was brought in by Kirby to coach wide receivers. He’s an ace recruiter, with great connections in Florida. Even among UGA’s crazy recruiting staff, Coley stands out.
With Jimbo Fisher moving to the SEC, Coley was tabbed to be his offensive coordinator at Texas A&M. It has been announced however that Coley turned down the offer and is going to be staying at Georgia next season.
This is a big win for Smart and UGA. Coley is absolutely ready to be an OC again and it’s surprising to see him turn down a job like this. I don’t know exactly why he would, but I have heard that he really likes Athens. His family are supposed to be very happy here and sometimes that’s important. Coaches move around so much, that stability can be important.
His performance has likely led to a nice pay raise in Athens as well as a multi-year deal. I don’t know if Georgia will be able to hold off other schools for many more years, but this is a win. Don’t be surprised if Coley ends up snagging another top prospect from Florida on signing day.
