Georgia football superlatives for the Bulldogs 2017 season
Junior of the Year: Terry Godwin
In his first two seasons as a Bulldog, Terry Godwin failed to stand out. He always showed how talented he was, even in his first few games back in 2015. But with a senior and all-time great Bulldog in Malcolm Mitchell getting all the attention that season, and Isaiah McKenzie having a great year in 2016, Godwin never received the recognition his talents deserved.
But that all changed this season. After catching 73 passes for 776 yards and two touchdowns in his first two seasons combined, Godwin has caught 28 passes for 540 yards with six touchdowns this year.
And while he’s still the no. 2 receiver behind Javon Wims, Godwin has made a huge impact. His touchdown catch against Notre Dame is heralded as one of the best catches of the year. And his touchdown catch and two-point conversion in the SEC Championship Game will both be watched as long as Georgia football exists.
Beyond his individual exploits, he played a major role in helping Jake Fromm mature. Godwin is a reliable target for the freshman. He always gets open, and then usually adds yards after the catch. Without Godwin, the offense produces nowhere near the amount of yards or points that they did.
Honorable mention: Deandre Baker
When Malcolm Parish injured his ankle in August, that should have been a fatal blow to Georgia’s defensive backfield. But it wasn’t because many players stepped up. But the one who stepped up the most was Deandre Baker.
Parish was the shutdown corner and his injury took that asset away from the defense. But Baker brought it back. He didn’t give up big plays. He covered his guy up and prevented catches. He even intercepted a few passes.
