Georgia football superlatives for the Bulldogs 2017 season
Bulldog of the Year: Roquan Smith
Who else besides Roquan Smith. The best defensive player in college football. The Butkus Award winner and the man who was robbed of other awards last week. No one was more dominant than Smith. That was evident against Georgia Tech when he flew from sideline to sideline making tackle.
Smith made plays all over the field. It was nothing to see him make a tackle in the backfield on one play and then break up a pass downfield the next. And then follow that with a tackle near the sideline.
There’s not more I can say. His performance on the field speaks for itself. He was the difference between Georgia’s defense being great and being dominant.
Honorable mention: Kirby Smart
Of course our head coach Kirby Smart deserves an honorable mention. Smart returned to Athens last season and after just two years, the Bulldogs are SEC Champions. Smart was a fantastic player for the Bulldogs in the 1990’s so he was the obvious choice to replace Mark Richt.
Next: Georgia recruiting is peaking at the right time
That decision has paid off in spades. Not only is Georgia dominating on the field, Smart is keeping the state’s best players from leaving. Georgia’s 2017 recruiting class finished third overall and second in the SEC. The 2018 class is currently first in the SEC and fourth nationally. Although with players like Cade Mays, Jamaree Salyer and Brenton Cox likely to commit to the G, the class will probably finish in the top-two.
Because of Smart, Georgia looks to not only be a national title contender this season, but the Bulldogs will remain a contender for years to come. Offense and defense compliment each other. Special teams are reliable. And recruiting is on an elite level.
