Georgia Football: Who has the edge in coaching at Rose Bowl?
By Mike Stowe
1. Offensive coordinator – Oklahoma.
Cale Gundy and Bill Bedenbaugh share this position as co-offensive coordinators. They have over 20 years experience between them. Gundy works with wide receivers while Bedenbaugh is an offensive line guru. Both are quality coaches. And while they are officially listed as co-offensive coordinators, the well-oiled machine that is the Sooner offense is run by head coach Lincoln Riley. He ran it under recently retired head coach Bob Stoops and has continued to successfully do so in his first year as Oklahoma head coach.
With assistance from Bedenbaugh and Gundy, he has made sure that this offense stayed what it has historically been for decades now- a scoring machine. Riley is an offensive genius that calls plays and this unit has been nearly unstoppable this year in the Big 12. They have averaged 44.9 points per game and scored 41, 59, and 41 points in their last 3 games. This offensive staff has them clicking.
While the Sooners have the edge, they shouldn’t sleep on Jim Chaney. Having been the target of UGA fans ire for most of last year, 2017 has been very different. Chaney has done a great job of calling plays this year. Now that he has a decent offensive line, it’s amazing how much better Georgia look on offense this year. This is by no means a walkover and it wouldn’t be shocking is UGA’s offense wins the day in Pasadena.
