Georgia Football: Top 15 All-Time Bulldogs Running Backs
Top All-Time Georgia Running Backs – Number 7: Rodney Hampton (1987-89)
Career stats: 472 carries, 2,668 rushing yards, 22 rushing TDs, 5.7 YPC, 46 receptions, 438 receiving yards, 3 receiving TDs
Just by looking at his career totals, you wouldn’t be blown away by Rodney Hampton. However, there are a number of key stats that highlight just how impressive of a talent he was for the Bulldogs during his three years with the team.
First, he set the Georgia single-game all-purpose yards record with 290 yards (227 rushing, 28 receiving, 35 kickoff return) in 1987, which was later broken by the No. 4 player on this list. Yes, that was as a freshman. On top of that, he’s one of only two freshman running backs in Bulldogs history to crack the 200-yard mark on the ground. That’s quite the feat for a young back.
Here’s another one for you: Hampton owns the record for the best yards-per-carry average by a freshman (7.06). Considering some of the elite Georgia talents who saw significant action in their first years, that’s one to hang your hat on.
The Texas native was an unstoppable force, particularly during his freshman season. Although his effectiveness suffered as opponents game-planned for him in his subsequent years, Hampton still sits as the No. 8 all-time rusher in Georgia history and proved even youngsters could shine in college football before it was the hip thing to do.
