Georgia Basketball got a big victory over their in state rivals last night. The 80-59 dismantling is sure to get Dawg fans excited for the season.
Georgia is now 8-2 on the season after an 80-59 dismantling of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Stegman Coliseum in Athens last night. This is one of the best starts in recent memory under head coach Mark Fox and sets this Georgia Basketball team up very nice as it gets prepared to head into league play on New Year’s Eve against Kentucky.
Tech jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. It didn’t last long though. A Turtle Jackson pass to a thunderous Derek Ogbeide dunk gave the Dawgs their first lead of 11-9 at the 15:23 mark in the 1st half. The two teams continued to trade baskets for a while. But the Dawgs eventually got a 7 point lead and momentum.
They went up 26-17 with a jump hook shot from Yante Maten at the 7:54 mark in the first half. Tech made a late push that included a Moses Wright dunk and they eventually brought it within 2 points. Josh Okogie for Tech had a chance to tie the game but missed the attempt making the score at halftime 36-34. The score was close and some of the stats were identical, with both teams having 8 turnovers and 5 steals. Georgia also only had 1 more rebound, with 16 to Tech’s 15.
The 2nd half began with a shot attempt by Tech’s Tadric Jackson that was viciously blocked by Yante Maten. That led to a reverse layup by Ogbeide and an early second half run that seen the Dawgs go a perfect 8-8 before finally missing a shot. The second half was pretty much dominated by UGA. One of UGA’s last scores was a long 3 by freshman Jordan Harris. This was part of a 44 point second half by the Dawgs that resulted in a final score of 80-59.
