How did he end up at UGA?

If there was one player in the 2018 class that I wouldn’t have expected 6 weeks ago, its Mays. He’s a Tennessee legacy, his father played on the offensive line and blocked for Peyton Manning back in the day. His uncle also played for the Vols and he was committed to Tennessee for something like 2 years.

Mays grew up in Knoxville, his father has a business there, he was considered to be a ‘chosen one’ for Vols fans. But the 2017 season really caused some issues for the Mays family. It was a complete disaster and the botched handling of the head coaching job after Butch Jones’ departure seemed to end may’s interest in the school he loved as a child.

This has upset Vols fans a lot. He’s been called a ‘traitor’ and an awful lot worse by fans. But at the end of the day, it looks like he took a business decision. it came down to Georgia and Clemson at the end. While UGA is loaded with line talent, they also have Sam Pittman. Mays might not play 3 straight years, but he will get better at Georgia.

That is the main reason that he chose UGA on signing day. Mays will enroll early and start battling for a job straight away. He’s going to have to play in Knoxville at least once in his career and he’s going to get a lot of boos. But this was still probably the best decision for him. UGA offers him a great chance to get better and make his way to the pro ranks.
