Georgia Football 2018 recruit: Nations No.3 DE Brenton Cox
How did he end up at UGA?
Like a lot of the prospects we’ve already looked at, Cox did not have a straightforward route to Athens. If you ever wonder why recruiting can be such a fickle mistress look no further than Cox. Back in April, Cox had narrowed his choice down to UGa and Ohio State. His decision to head to Columbus, coupled with the fact that UGA’s class was almost empty at the time, left a lot of people to panic.
Remember us talking about people panicking back when Adam Anderson decommitted? Well lets times that by about 10 when Cox decided to go to OSU. His reasoning for going there also left people quite upset. Cox declared that the reason he was going to Columbus was that they could make him a high draft pick and UGA couldn’t.
Considering Leonard Floyd was a top 10 pick back in 2016 and Kirby Smart hasn’t exactly struggled to put defenders into the league, this seemed like a bad line at the time. When the regular season started and UGA played so well, things started to change. Cox was seen at a couple of home games and 2019 commits Jadon Haselwood and Rashad Chaney were often ween working on him.
Cox eventually decommitted at the beginning of December and by then, people were expecting him to end up in Athens. He made his decision on December 20th and picked UGA over Alabama. Cox will enroll early and should be in Athens in just a few weeks.
