What can we expect in Athens?

Luke Ford has all the potential in the world to become a game-changing tight end. It might, however, take him some time to really show those skills in Athens because he’s joining a pretty stacked position group.

Issac Nauta and Charlie Woerner will both go into their junior seasons and they are legitimate NFL prospects. Nauta could well bolt if he has a big 2018 because he’s a former 5-star prospect. He’s already on teams radars and he plays well, he could go high. Woerner hasn’t played that much and I can certainly see him staying for another year.

It’ll be hard for Ford to beat out both of these guys for playing time straight away. However, it’s a great chance for him to learn and develop. Both of these players will hopefully be able to show Ford how to get better. He will compete for playing time and if he gets any, then fans will know that he’s working hard.

It’s worth remembering that Kirby Smart likes his receivers to block. He expects exactly the same from his tight ends and he’s blown up on Issac Nauta a few times for failing to do that. Ford will have to show the staff that he can be trusted in this regard to see the field early.

Hopefully, he can and in doing so, he should improve Nauta who sometimes looks like he needs someone breathing down his neck. The entire position group should benefit from the addition of Ford.
