Georgia Football could have a secret weapon in the Rose Bowl. Will the talented but underused tight end group break out in Pasadena?
It’s almost here, Dawg fans. In just a few days, we will get to experience history when UGA plays in “The Grandaddy of them all” for only the second time in school history. The Georgia football team has officially touched down in Los Angeles and had their first practice on Wednesday for the much-anticipated Rose Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners on New Year’s Day. The season is over for the loser. The winner gets to play for a national title a week later against the winner of the Sugar Bowl which features Clemson vs. Alabama.
Whether you are a Dawg fan, a Sooner fan, or just a college football fan in general, you’ve heard about this one. You have heard about Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma’s high-octane offense. You’ve heard about Roquan Smith and Georgia’s Junkyard Dawg defense. You’ve more than likely seen the dominance of UGA’s running game with the 3 headed monster of Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, and Deandre Swift.
Most people seem to think that this game is simple. For Georgia to win, they must run the ball and play stellar defense. For Oklahoma to win, they must get a typical Baker Mayfield performance from their senior Heisman trophy winning quarterback and slow down the running game of UGA. All those things are true. But with a big-time playoff game between two heavyweights such as this one, the difference maker sometimes can be something that not many people see coming. And I could absolutely see that being the case in this game. I’m talking about one particular offensive position group for UGA that could win the game for the Dawgs (and a position that Oklahoma is strong at)- their tight ends.
