Georgia Football: UGA Players of the Rose Bowl Victory
2. Lorenzo Carter
That is an image that some of us might have to frame. When Lorenzo Carter blocked the field goal in the second period of overtime, I’m not going to lie, I freaked out. When I watched the replay, my jaw hit the damn floor.
The guy practically levitated and held himself in the air. It was like he was hovering there until the ball hit his hands. Simply an unbelievable play by a guy who has been a warrior for this Georgia team.
This play was the perfect ending to Carter’s game. Once again, he was everywhere. He rushed the passer and accounted for half a sack. Unlike a lot of OLB’s however, Carter’s game is about much more than just pass rushing. He dropped back into coverage and made a huge impact there and in the second half, he really helped shut down the OU running game.
Carter has been one of the great ‘do everything’ players for Georgia. The guy’s impact has been felt all over the field for roughly 4 years. While he’s never quite turned into the pass rusher some expected, his overall impact can never really be measured. He’s the great example of someone who if you just look at sacks, you miss his overall value to a team.
You couldn’t find a more fitting player to make that block for Georgia. It’s like it was fate, to be honest, nobody has done more to have that moment than Carter.
