Georgia Football: Sony Michel deserved his Rose Bowl moment
Rose Bowl was the brightest moment yet:
2017 really has been the season that Chubb and Michel dreamed for. When they committed to coming back, moments like last night is what they wanted. Having never really had the chance to really play for anything in their first 3 seasons, things have sure changed in their senior year.
They’ve gone from the Belk Bowl to the Rose Bowl. From never beating Florida to blowing them out in Jacksonville. Having never played a meaningful game in December, they have now played for and won an SEC Championship. They have taken their team to Pasadena for the first time since 1943 and won one of the best games in college football history. Georgia will play for the national championship next week and they will do so because of Michel.
In the biggest game of his life, he delivered a performance for the ages. 15 touches, 222 yards and 4 touchdowns. But it wasn’t all joy. When he fumbled in the 4th quarter, it looked like the game was over. UGA’s comeback had been stopped and momentum looked like it had turned one final time. Michel was heartbroken on the sideline as it looked like his final carry in a Georgia jersey would cost his team the game.
But the story wasn’t over. In a testament to how Michel and his fellow seniors have changed this team, they rallied behind their leader. They pulled together a touchdown drive to send the game to overtime. The defense pulled out consecutive stops and then Lorenzo Carter made his ‘leap’.
When Sony hit the edge in double overtime, the game was essentially already over. All the Dawgs needed to do was not mess up. Michel never gave them or Oklahoma the chance. He iced the game and sent Dawgnation into delirium.
Next: Who were the other heroes in Pasadena?
But as Richard Lecounte would say, ‘he ain’t done yet’. Sony Michel will have one last game with his team and an opportunity at history. As Dawg fans lost their minds, the man who gave them that feeling quickly waved his hands and moved on. If his final year is any indication, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Michel having one final moment in Atlanta in 6 days. Greats have a habit of doing that.
