Offensive line play:

Unsurprisingly, we’re going to start in the trenches. While most college football teams have adopted the spread, it’s interesting that the two playing for all the marbles play pretty traditional football. Both of these sides rely on huge hulking offensive linemen throwing defensive players around and punishing running backs.

Now that might not be as fun to watch for the casual observer as 5 receiver sets, but you can’t argue with the results. For all the talk about Alabama’s defense over the years, their offensive line has been consistently awesome. Pretty much since the day that Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide have been good up front. Not much has changed since then.

While there were issues for Bama on the line at times this year, those seemed to disappear against Clemson. Just to be clear, that’s the same Clemson who have the best defensive front in all of football. Yeah, Bama bossed them around like they were children for 4 quarters. That entire Clemson line could be drafted in the 1st round by the way.

Now Bama is not the only side who rely on their line. Georgia has seen dramatically improved O-line play this year and that is one of their keys to success. Sam Pittman has turned that unit into one of the best in the country and with lots of talent coming in, it will likely just get better in years to come.

But on Monday, this area will be key to watch. Both sides rely on the run and both need their offensive lines to control the clock. Whichever unit does that better will more than likely win the trophy in the end.
