Georgia football: Top performers from the Bulldogs win over Oklahoma
Georgia football shocked the world Monday night by erasing a 17-point deficit to defeat Oklahoma in double-overtime to win the 2018 Rose Bowl.
Without a doubt, Georgia football and Oklahoma played in one of the greatest games in college football history Monday night. The Bulldogs and Sooners were locked in a war. The game had everything a casual fan could want.
A comeback; great defenses at times; big plays on the ground and the air; a defensive touchdown and another near score; a record-breaking field goal; overtime; a blocked field goal; and a game-winning touchdown.
But in the end, when all the dust had settled and when all the smoke had cleared, Georgia held their hands high as the winners of the 2018 Rose Bowl. Now the Bulldogs head back to Atlanta for the National Championship Game.
Before that, we can still praise the performance of the Georgia Bulldogs two nights ago. So here are the top players and coaches from Monday night’s triumph over Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl.
Jake Fromm
Everyone said Jake Fromm couldn’t beat Oklahoma. If Fromm had to pass the ball more than 25 times, the Dawgs would be done. They couldn’t win unless Chubb and Michel held the ball 75-percent of the game.
About that. If you haven’t learned already, you learned Monday, do not underestimate Jake Fromm. The true freshman, if you can still call him that, went 20-of-29 for 210 yards with two touchdowns. Not stellar. Certainly not going to blow anyone away. But he never made a mistake, completed most of his passes. He had two accurate passes dropped by receivers.
More importantly, he showed what kind of leader he is. When Georgia was down and all but out, Fromm led a great drive completed three of his four passes to set up the game tying score. With just over a minute left, he threw a perfect pass to Javon Wims in the end zone that didn’t produce points only because of a penalty on the defender covering Wims.
Beyond his passing, Fromm showed his leadership in other ways. Late in the third quarter, from went up to the line to change the direction of a play. That play ended up being a 38-yard touchdown run by Sony Michel. In the fourth quarter, on the game tying drive, Fromm avoided an easy sack and dumped a short pass to Michel for a big gain.
Fromm might be a first year starter. he might only be 18 years old. But if you didn’t know any better Monday night, you’d think he was the veteran heading into the NFL Draft, not Baker Mayfield.
