Georgia Football: Title game showed best and worst of sports
Can we please leave politics out of football?
Ok, so I’m not trying to be political here. My gripe here isn’t the specifics of the President. It’s about how what should have been a moment for the players and fans, was hijacked by someone who has nothing to do with the game of football.
The fact that the President decided that he wanted his own moment during the national anthem was appalling. There, I said it. I’m not upset because I don’t like him, I’m upset because he took that moment away from the people who had worked so hard to be there.
This game was supposed to be about the players who had worked their entire lives to be on that field yesterday. Players like Nick Chubb and Sony Michel should be the focus, not that the President is standing up and kind of, maybe, might not know the words to the damn anthem.
I’m sorry but this was a bad look for college football and sports in general. President Trump wasn’t there for the game, he was there to have his picture taken. In fact, he was there to get a very specific picture that fits in with a political narrative he’s invested in. It was up on twitter before the game ended and I can already see the ‘I stand with Trump’ email blast coming. He made it all about him, and for me, that is heartbreaking.
Anyone who loves the game of college football saw a little bit of it die last night when it’s brightest stage was reduced to a ‘political opportunity’. That any politician would use that platform to further their agenda is deeply upsetting to me. I don’t care who he/she is or what party they are from, I don’t like anything that devalues college football.
