What type of player is he?

Don’t let his size fool you, Smith is a really good cornerback. While he;s not as long and tall as Kirby Smart would ideally like, he is incredibly competitive and takes on receivers in a very physical manner. He loves to hit them at the line of scrimmage and he’s one of the best tackling cornerbacks I have seen in some time.

Smith and Poole are similar players in that they have been well coached and they love playing the position. While neither has the physical gifts of the likes of Joseph or Ameer Speed, I wouldn’t be shocked to see both of them earn playing time over them. Smith is fast, as in really fast and that helps make up for a lot at this position. He also  just know how to play the position and he do it really well.

When you watch his tape, Smith is one of those players who jumps off the film. He might be the smallest defender UGA signs this year. But he is also one of the top 3 biggest hitters despite that size. The way that he reads quarterbacks and diagnoses players is really impressive. Finally, Smith has a habit of getting turnovers. As good as UGA were this year, that’s something they always need more of.

Some players have the size, speed and talent, but when you watch them, they don’t pop. Smith is the opposite. While he might no have the physical characteristics some scouts might look for, he dominates when he plays the game. Look for him to make some waves in that secondary unit when he gets to Athens this summer
