Georgia Football: Top 15 plays for the 2017 season
12. ‘Roquan says NO’ – Rose Bowl
It’s not entirely surprising to see Roquan on this list a second time. He’ll be on it again later, but this was one of the most underrated plays of the season for me. Having clawed their way back from 17 points down, UGA took Oklahoma into overtime for the first time in Rose Bowl history and Roquan had his own piece of history from that period.
With Georgia going first, they were forced to kick a field goal. That meant that if OU scored a touchdown, the game was over. With the Sooners needing just 2 yards on a third down, they ran a short end around with a 6-2 wide receiver. This was the result.
Jordan Smallwood is OU’s biggest receiver, the guy is a load. He had the angle on Roquan as well, it looked for certain that he was going to make it to that yellow line. But Smith did what he had done all season and shut down a running play with textbook technique and a physical hit.
This play forced the Sooners to kick. It kept the game alive and sent us into double overtime and we all remember how that finished. Sometimes these moments are overlooked and forgotten by fans, but it’s one I will always remember.
Roquan was so dominant this season and there were so many times that he made you gasp with his play. It’s hard to make a highlight reel that truly shows the impact that he had on this team but plays like this and the time that they happened certainly help explain just how good he was.
