Georgia Football starting to have ‘Rich Program Problems’.
Who has come in?
But it hasn’t all been coaching leaving. UGA has brought in a couple of coaches already, both of whom are proficient on the defensive side of the ball.
Dan Lanning:
Lanning is someone with an Alabama background and we know how good that is for Kirby Smart. He was brought in to replace Sherrer as OLB coach. Lanning and Smart worked together back in 2015 when Lanning was a Graduate Assistant for the Crimson Tide. He then went off to Memphis where he had a really big impact. Not only did he develop a reputation for being a really good coach of outside linebacker. Lanning is also a very well respected recruiter.
Lanning ended up taking the title of ‘Recruiting Coordinator’ at Memphis after just one season. That’s important for Kirby who will always demand that his coaches recruit like heck. Dawgnation wrote a great article about him when he was announced and he looks just like the kind of coach Kirby likes. A young, hardworking coach on the rise who will work his butt off with the players and the recruiting trail.
Tyson Summers:
Sommers and Kirby go waaayyyyyy back. They were roommates together back in 2005 when they were both on Mark Richt’s staff on that SEC Championship team Summers then climbed up the coaching ranks and was hired by Mike Bobo to run the defense for Colorado State. He was then hired by Georgia Southern but never really fit in at a program that still loves the triple option.
He was brought in by Smart after the season for an off the field role. Summers has been out recruiting right now as UGA now only has 8 coaches. He has lots of relationships throughout Georgia high schools just like Kirby and so he’s clearly been brought in with a specific job in mind.
