Most Improved Offensive Player
Javon Wims: Senior Wide Receiver
To be honest, this one wasn’t even very close. Wims is another player who could have seriously won player of the year. The guy from pretty much nowhere to become the best receiver on the entire roster for his entire senior season.
He’s always been talented and he does have a great skill set. We saw this year that his size and ability to go up and get a ball are pretty special. Catches like the one he made above, became a normal thing for Wims. While he never quite had a magical moment like Terry Godwin, he consistently made difficult catches.
The thing that really impressed me thing year with Wims was his body control. There are plenty of big-bodied receivers out there. While it’s true that Wims is fast and has great hands, it’s his ability to move his body in the right direction that separates him. He’s a nightmare for cornerbacks not just because of his size, but because he seemed to always find a way to get his hands where they need to be and then get his feet down.
Its a truly great skill set for an outside receiver and one that Jake Fromm used over and over again. The true test of a great player is when everyone knows the ball is going to you and nobody can stop you. We saw that a few times with Wims this season and he deserves so much credit for turning himself into a top-flight player. He’s another guy I can’t wait to see on Sundays.
