Georgia Football Awards for the 2017 team
Offensive Captain for the Year
Nick Chubb & Sony Michel: Senior Running Backs
I told myself I wasn’t going to do any split awards. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stick to that when it came to this particular one. There is no way that I can say that either Sony Michel OR Nick Chubb meant more to this team and this unit than the other. They have both meant so much to this school and us as fans, that I couldn’t pick one over the other.
As great as Wynn was, as impressive as Fromm and Terry Godwin were, this team ran through these two guys. The 2017 Georgia Bulldogs were a running team. And we weren’t just any old running team, we were a great one, the kind that people will talk about for a long time.
Together, these guys ran all over their opponents as well as into the history books. They became the most prolific duo of running backs in the history of football. 8407. That’s how many yards these two guys have run for during their careers. It’s a number all Dawg fans should commit to memory as well because I’m not sure it’s one we will ever see broken.
Because they shared the spotlight as well as the carries, neither of these guys could be the most valuable player. It’s one thing to return for your senior year. It’s another to do so while knowing that you’re going to split carries with a guy as good as you and never be a ‘go-to guy’.
But that’s exactly what both of these guys did and in doing so, they changed the course of UGA football. Both of them meant more to our program that I’ll ever be able to put into words, but they’ve been a joy to watch. You couldn’t ask for two better guys to point to and say ‘That’s what being a Georgia Bulldog is all about’. There are leaders and then there are Captains, and Captains is exactly what Sony Michel and Nick Chubb are.
