Georgia Football fans have had a lot to cheer about on the recruiting trail this winter already, but Tramel Walthour is a current commit with a lot of promise.
After cleaning up back in December, you’d be forgiven for thinking that recruiting season was over for the Georgia Football team. Kirby Smart signed 20 players. 6 of whom were 5-star players. No, you didn’t read that wrong, 6. That means that UGA currently has the number 1 recruiting class in the country.
But there are still a few more spots to go and UGA is fighting hard to get the best possible players to fill them. With national signing day now 10 days away, I thought I’d start diving into some of the names that Dawg fans should know.
Right now, it looks like the Dawgs have either 4 or 5 spots (depending who you believe) up for grabs in this class. They seem to be actively recruiting about 8 or 9 players for those positions. So let’s take a quick look at another of those players who could end up in Athens.
Tramel Walthour might be the most underrated player in this UGA class.
We all love to find those underrated guys. Every person who likes recruiting wants to be able to say that they were in on a kid before everyone else. Of course, with a 5-star, its clear how good they should be. That’s not always the case with some lower rated prospects.
Tramel Walthour is pretty under the radar. He’s an understated guy who doesn’t talk to the media. He doesn’t go to the showcase or camp circuits. Walthour hasn’t even been taking other visits since he committed to Georgia back in September. He’s pretty much just been a normal high school kid.
A lot of fans are pushing Walthour out of this 2018 Georgia class. They think that his ranking is too low for him to be a take over some other prospects. But I disagree with that theory. When I watch Walthour play, it’s clear that the talent is there. He’s very capable of wrecking the inside of an offensive line. When he uses his hands correctly, his explosiveness really shines through. You can see why Tray Scott wants to coach him.
Look I’m not saying star ratings don’t matter, they do, but something guys slip through the cracks. I’m a fan of Walthour having watched him. I think he’s going to be a good player at the next level. He should fit in really well to the Georgia defensive line rotation and he kind of reminds me of Tyler Clark.
I’m not saying that he’s going to have that same level of impact, but he’s a talented guy. Coaches think that he’s raw and that he needs time to develop. He’ll get that at Georgia and he could well become a real impact player for the Dawgs one day.
Next: UGA Football is getting more expensive in 2018
Despite what some might hope, the fact that Walthour hasn’t taken any visits to any other school tells me that he is likely going to be in this class. I for one think that is going to be a very good thing.
