The awards keep coming for the 2017 Georgia Football team. This time, it’s recognition for the teams architect, Kirby Smart.

Georgia Football head coach Kirby Smart had yet another accomplishment added to his already impressive young head coaching resume this past week. He was named the Maxwell Football Club collegiate football Coach of the Year. He adds that to his SEC Coach of the year award from earlier this season.

He took an 8-5 team that fell short of expectations and just a season later led many of the same players to a 13-2 record. That includes an SEC East championship, an SEC championship, UGA’s first berth in the playoffs, a Rose Bowl win against the Oklahoma Sooners, and the Dawgs first appearance in a national title game since 1983.

Smart deserves this honor. While fans hoped he could deliver, nobody expected he could do so this quickly.  Of course, that success won’t stop rival fans from criticizing Smart. Already, Tennessee fans think that Jeremy Pruitt is a better HC than Kirby. Florida have anointed Dan Mullen as the next ‘Chosen one’. In the brutal world of the SEC, Smart is going to have to keep winning and his rivals will get better. That’s just life in the toughest conference in college football.

Next on the UGA football menu is National Signing Day this Wednesday. Most of the heavy lifting was done by Smart and his staff on the first annual early signing day. The Dawgs signed 20 players  in December. But there are still some 4 and 5 star gems who can help UGA finish with the number 1 recruiting class in the nation.

Coach Smart will continue to prove on Wednesday why he is the Coach of the Year and the perfect hire in Athens. Keep checking in here at Dawn of the Dawg to keep up to date and see where Georgia finishes.
