What can we expect in Athens?

Campbell will walk into Athens as the most talented cornerback on the roster. That doesn’t mean that he will instantly start, but it is significant. 2017 signee Ameer Speed is the only other defensive back who has the same length as Campbell. But even he isn’t as fast or has the same type of big-play ability that Campbell has.

It should be remembered, that Campbell isn’t going to arrive on campus until this summer. He’s not going to have a huge amount of time to win a spot and he walks into a crowded secondary room. Kirby Smart has loaded up on CB’s over the last couple of classes. Campbell is going to have to beat out a lot of players to win some playing time.

But I wouldn’t put it past him. Deandre Baker is likely going to hold down one side of the field in 2018. His return for his senior season is great for Campbell. There is a lot the senior will be able to teach the young freshman about technique and reading the QB.

But outside of Baker, the other cornerback spots are up for grabs. I fully expect Campbell to find a way to see the field at some point in 2018. He’s just too good to leave on the bench for long.

Next: 3 recruits that could star as freshmen

When Baker leaves, I fully expect Campbell to step up and become that shutdown corner. He has the talent to be a very high draft pick after his junior year, so it’s unlikely UGA gets more than 3 years out of him. But I wouldn’t be shocked if the latter two of those are very good years. Tucker coached NFL defensive backs for quite a while. He’s going to love getting to mould Campbell into an absolute weapon.
