Georgia Football 2018 recruit: Linebacker Quay Walker
What type of player is he?
Walker is a versatile linebacker who can play pretty much any of the four spots UGA has. He’s seen by a lot of recruiting services as an outside linebacker who rushes the passer. While that’s a skill set he absolutely has, there is a lot more that Walker can do.
One of the thing that jumps off the film when you watch him is how good the guy is in coverage. In some of the highlights below, he’s essentially playing as a cornerback in some sets. The fact that a guy is able to do that at his size says all you need to know about his athleticism. It’s quite simply elite.
Walker reminds me a bit of Lorenzo Carter when I watched his film. He’s that kind of guy who is going to drop into coverage when he needs, stuff the run and rush the passer. That versatility is really valuable in Kirby Smart’s scheme which is why UGA fought so hard to get him.
I don’t know for sure that Walker is going to be the leader Lorenzo was, but I think he’s an impact player. Walker earned a 5th star on the 247 rankings and is a consensus top 50 player in all the rankings.
One thing I can say is that I am very happy that we won this recruiting battle. Walker is the kind of player that I really did not want to see playing for the Vols. Pruitt might have temperament issues, but he and Sherrer can sure as heck coach. I’d much rather have a talent like Walker on our side than theirs.
