What can we expect in Athens?

I expect Walthour to stay on the interior of the defensive line. There are a couple of reasons for that. One is that I really believe in Scot Sinclair and his strength team to get guys where they need to be in terms of size. Secondly, I actually think UGA needs him at DT more than they do on the outside. Johnathan Ledbetter and David Marshall are holding down defensive end right now and I’m a big fan of Malik Herring as well although he might end up kicking inside.

But Georgia does need some good young interior linemen. Trenton Thompson and John Atkins are gone. Tyler Clark and Julian Rochester are both Juniors next year. Clark could certainly end up going pro after 3 years. UGA needs to keep bringing in talented guys to play there.

I expect Walthour to take some time to adjust to college ball, but I believe that he’s going to make an impact at Georgia. I’m not projecting him to become the next Tyler Clark, a lower rated guy who blows up, but I do think he’s going to be an important piece for this team.

You need 5 or 6 good interior guys to play this system and Walthour can be one of those guys. He’s a good pass rusher and I can certainly see him getting more time in passing situations. His motor should also help earn him more time on the field. Kirby loves guys who play hard on those lines.

While he isn’t a flashy name, Walthour is an example of just how talented this class really is. A lot of teams would love to have this guy and they would make him the focal point of their defensive front. At Georgia, he’s just another cog in what will hopefully be a devastating machine. It should  be fun to watch!
