Georgia Football: 5 potential captain candidates this spring
3. Lamont Gaillard
Gaillard might well end up being the smallest lineman for UGA by the time the season starts. If the likes of Isaiah Wilson and Jamaree Salyer end up taking starting spots, then Gaillard will probably be the only guy who plays who is around the 300lb mark. All of the rest could end up pushing 340lbs which is kind of insane.
That won’t stop Gaillard from being a leader, however. We saw in 2017 how important it was for the offensive line to have that senior in Isaiah Wynn. Again, Wynn was not the biggest or most physically dominant player on that line last season. But he worked hard on his technique and turned himself into a solid draft pick. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Gaillard do the same this season.
Having Gaillard return for his senior season was big for this unit. Center remains a critical position and having a guy who knows the scheme well and what to do is really important. Gaillard should be very capable of making adjustments with Jake Fromm in 2018. It means a lot to have a guy who will be there to mentor the younger players as well.
Gaillard is like Reed in that he was not a highly recruited guy. He had to switch to the offensive line to see the field and he’s turned that switch into three years of starting at UGA. That’s impressive and it demands respect from his peers.
Georgia’s young offensive line talent is incredibly impressive in 2018. But Gaillard might be the most important player of the entire bunch for that season. It’s up to him to carry on the legacy that Wynn laid down this past season. If he does, this unit could be something special.
