Georgia Football: Defensive linemen to watch this spring
Michail Carter, DT Junior
Carter was one of the big time signings Kirby Smart pulled off in his very first recruiting class. Coming out of Jackson GA, there were times where it looked like Carter would end up elsewhere. But Kirby put the full court press on him and was able to bring him to Athens.
A higher rated prospect than Tyler Clark when he arrived, Carter has battled some injuries since he reached UGA. However, when he’s been healthy, Carter has made an impact on the field. While he doesn’t quite have Clark’s explosive first step, Carter has everything you look for in a defensive tackle.
2018 is going to be a big year for the Junior. He’s flashed potential, but with Trenton Thompson leaving, he is in line to take Clark’s position as the lead backup at DT. In this system, that means plenty of playing time as well as big expectations.
The spring is going to be huge for Carter. He’s going to have to take a step up if he wants to secure that position. Kirby Smart loves to see position battles in camps and this will be a big test for Carter. I think he’s going to step up and win that playing time. This Spring will hopefully be the time where we start to see him stand out a bit more.
